Year 2

Welcome to Spring Term in Year 2

We are looking forward to exploring our Spring Bookshelf and learning how the characters in the stories inspire bravery, cultivate curiosity, and celebrate the virtues that shape a better world.

Spring Bookshelf

The books chosen highlight the importance of integrity and kindness, encouraging our children to act with honesty and empathy in every situation. They also illustrate the strength that comes from citizenship, both in standing up for what’s right and in fostering a sense of community. Through tales of courage and gratitude, these books remind us that even the smallest acts of goodness can spark meaningful change, and that by embracing these values, we all have the potential to make a difference.

Our aim is for your children to become confident learners and to carry their love of learning throughout their lives.

Spring Learning

  • Multiplication and division
  • Length and height
  • Mass and capacity

English

In our first few weeks of term, we will explore Lila and the Secret of Rain and recap and develop the use of descriptive vocabulary to write interesting character descriptions. We will then read How to Catch a Star and turn our hand to story writing to retell and create our own narratives. Next, we will immerse ourselves into George’s Marvellous Medicine, creating our own set of instructions. Near the end of Spring Term, we will write a diary entry as if we are Samuel Pepys and create a setting description about Pudding Lane during The Great Fire of London. We will also explore poetry, with a focus on alliterative free-verse poems.

Science

In Spring, the children will begin the topic of ‘Plants’ with an exciting investigation to kick things off.

History

The Great Fire of London with a focus on change and continuity by answering the enquiry question – How did the Great Fire of London change England?

Geography

We will be learning about the vast continent of Africa. The children will consider human and physical processes, natural landscapes and human land use to explore the significant differences across Africa.
